Awakening Palladio A Methodological Exploration of the Study of Palladian Villas

Chaoxin Yan – Shanghai Jiao Tong University

Abstract

This study re-examines Andrea Palladio’s architectural legacy beyond the canonical interpretation centered on symmetry and classical temple motifs. By analyzing three non-centralized villas – Thiene, Repeta, and Sarego – the paper reveals Palladio’s experimental approach to spatial hierarchy, circulation, and façade treatment, challenging Rudolf Wittkower’s geometric reductionism. Through planimetric and sectional analysis, the research demonstrates how these villas subvert the Renaissance matrix model through courtyard-centric layouts, fragmented temple elements, and decentralized façades, with Villa Sarego even negating classical frontality entirely. The findings suggest that Palladio’s authorship accommodated divergent design logics, influenced by contextual factors and patron demands. This alternative reading critiques the enduring dominance of Palladianism in neoclassical architecture, proposing that Palladio’s historical reception has been selectively filtered through later ideological frameworks.
