The Undedicated Form Resonant Spaces as a Catalyst for the Individual Attribution of Meaning

Tobias Rabold – TU Berlin

Abstract

In a society where overarching ideological references have lost universal validity, architecture’s potential to foster individual meaning is increasingly relevant. This research explores the poetic potential of non-propositional spaces – architectural environments that provoke personal attribution of meaning without predefined ideological dedication. Two key parameters shape this inquiry: emotional resonance and absence of ideological dedication ex ante. Emotional resonance enables spaces to elicit affective responses, drawing from concepts like aura, atmosphere, and the sublime. The absence of ideological dedication challenges traditional spatial codification, allowing for open-ended interpretation. Through the method of intuitive drawings of spatial compositions, speculative projects, and suggestive spatial artifacts, this research investigates the dichotomy of authorship: the architect as the author of a spatial configuration and the user as the author of their own individual meaning. The study ultimately proposes a speculative typology that fosters individual sense-making in a pluralistic society.
