Cultural Narratives in Collective Spaces The Role of Architectural Design in the Regeneration of Miao Villages
Abstract
Modernization and urbanization improved the lifestyle of local people, and the layout of collective space was modified accordingly, disrupting the historical grammar of public space in Miao villages in Guizhou. Amidst China’s rural revitalization efforts, locals are adapting to rapid societal changes, with architectural design subtly influencing their survival strategies. This research investigates the interplay between Architectural Design, Cultural Narratives, and Collective Spaces in Miao villages, offering insights into their cultural dynamics. The study uses cultural narratives and collective spaces theory within architectural design, using Narratology to understand how architectural elements contribute to Miao villages’ cultural narrative landscape. Additionally, the research emphasizes the importance of collective spaces for social interaction and cultural preservation in Miao villages, fostering community cohesion and identity. The core focus lies in examining how architectural design conveys cultural meaning in Miao villages, portraying cultural identity and values symbolically. By integrating theoretical frameworks with empirical research, the study deepens our understanding of the relationship between architecture and culture in Miao communities.
