The Changing Roles of Sustainable Landscape Design in Historical Industrial Landscapes
Abstract
Post-industrial landscapes are often characterized by neglected industrial areas that have lost their original purpose. Transforming these areas through sustainable design can include the revitalization of brownfields, the creation of green spaces and the integration of renewable energy sources. These steps can significantly improve the quality of life of local residents and attract new investment.
But current efforts to redevelop industrial wastelands and abandoned buildings raises broader views than just architectural, construction or environmental issues.
How will these changes and construction activities affect he living memory of the population and the local communities? Rediscovering and recognising the heritage and natural values just as social potential of decaying industrial sites are important and well known issues. But successful transformation of these mostly abandoned areas with recent decline of quality of living standards should open the door also to new forms of planning and designing of regeneration projects with highlighting the interdisciplinary collaboration and participation.
