Revisiting Authorship in Film and Architecture Auteurs and Collaborative Authorship Toward Auteur Space

Nina Bačun – Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb

Abstract

This text synthesizes key revolutionary writings on film theory related to authorship – specifically ‘la politique des auteurs’ (auteur policy) and the Russian avant-garde – to clarify their original intentions and reaffirm their relevance for contemporary filmmakers, architects, designers, artists, and scholars. It examines the concept of authorship in both architecture and film, focusing on cultural shifts that have amplified the role of the individual creator, redefined the attribution of creative works, and transformed power dynamics. Through a comparative analysis of individual and collaborative creation, the text introduces a concept of ‘auteur space’, wherein space itself assumes the role of the author. This approach offers a fresh perspective on the intersection of space, narrative, and artistic identity, facilitating new forms of agency.
